(Joker gets hauled into Arkham)
Guard 1: Right in here.
Joker: Did you ask him if he enjoyed that surprise I left?
Guard: Shut up.
(METAL DOORS open to allow Joker and the guards to enter).
Joker: Awwww...I wish I could have seen his face when it went ka-boom!.
(cell doors open as Joker enters)
Dr. Strange: Go tell Dr. Thompkins that here patient has arrived.
Guard: Yes Dr. Strange.
Joker: (mocking) Yes Dr. Strange!
(Joker sitting in his cell. Dr. Thompkins walks in with her new intern Dr. Harleeen Quinzel following behind).
Joker: Oh hello nurses, come to take my temperature? heh heh. Nice coats by the way...did you steal them from a real doctor on the way in?
Dr. Thompkins: My name is Dr. Thompkins and this is Dr. Quinzel and we will be doing your psychological exam today.
Joker: Ah a shrink...so you really did steal those coats from real doctors huh.
Dr. Thompkins: (ignores the joke) Okay, let's start with telling us a little about your past.
Joker: Hmm...let's see, should I start with my abusive father or my suicidal mother. Wait maybe it was a suicidal father and abusive mother. Or maybe it was the girl in first grade that was just so mean to me. Heh heh. Really it's up to you.
Dr. Thompkins: We're just trying to be helpful if you would...
Joker: We hmmm? You mean that one sitting over there is an actual doctor too? I thought that was a mime who forgot her costume. Do you have a name little one?
Harleen: Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Dr. Thompkins: She is assisting me in this session.
Joker: Well the truth is...I just had a horrible year. My wife died, my family abandoned me, I was coerced!....and...
Dr. Thompkins: Yes?
Joker: And you are just as gullible as I thought ha ha ha ha!
Dr. Thompkins: If that's how you want to be, we will come back another time.
(the two Doctors open the door to leave)
Joker: Maybe next time I'll tell you how traumatic my military years were. Ha ha.
(the two Doctors leave and meet up with Hugo Strange)
Strange: That didn't go as well as I had hoped.
Thompkins: I don't think we're gonna be able to get straight answers from him.
Strange: We need someone who will open up to him first, that way he trusts that they aren't just a cold doctor.
Quinzel: (timidly) If I may offer...
Thompkins: (interrupting) I could give it a try.
Quinzel: (timidly) I may be able to...
Strange: He won't trust you. He already thinks you are just playing games with him.
Quinzel: (more assuredly) Dr. Thompkins?
Thompkins: Do you have a suggestion Harleen?
Quinzel: I may be able to get close with him. He doesn't know much about me, and I might be able to earn his trust.
Strange: It's risky, you don't have a lot of experience working with the criminally insane. Are you sure you can handle it?
Quinzel: I have studied a lot of cases on men like him. I think this is our best chance of getting him to open up.
Strange: Dr. Thompkins, your professional opinion.
Thompkins: (unsure) It's risky...but if anyone can do it, I think it's Harleen.
Strange: Alright Dr. Quinzel, I will trust you with this, but please be careful. We don't know what we are dealing with.
(peer back into Jokers cell)
Joker: (low chuckle).
(change scenes to the next day as Harleen makes her case.)
Quinzel: Hello again.
Joker: (noticeably more somber tone) Ah, so you came back for another story. Sorry, don't feel like it. Move along kiddo.
Quinzel: No, I just want to talk.
Joker: About what? How I ruined my life in one terrible night of hysteria. Not like you actually care. All you want to do is label me as crazy and move right along.
Quinzel: That's not at all what I want. I can't speak for anyone else, but I came here because I care about people like you, and have come here to help you.
Joker: Really? How do I know you aren't just saying that?
Quinzel: Let me tell you something I've never told anyone. (affectionately) I never had friends as a child until in the 4th grade I met this really nice boy. We ate lunch together every day. He was troubled the school sent him to the psychiatrist and labeled him crazy, but I knew what he was really like. From that point on I have made it a goal of mine to make sure people like that don't go through the same thing.
Joker: Wow, thank you. For the first time in a long time I feel there is someone I can trust. What's your name?
Quinzel: Harleen Quinzel
Joker: Nice name. I'm feeling a little tired, can we do this again tomorrow.
Quinzel: Sure, whatever you like.
(Harleen leaves and gets met by Hugo Strange).
Strange: How did it go?
Quinzel: He trusts me. I can tell. I think he will start opening up soon.
Strange: Well done Dr. Quinzel. It seems Dr. Thompkins was right about you.
(the scene ends and fades back into a very echoed, loud, Joker laugh).
